First community grants awarded by ICENI's new Refreshment Fund
Six community projects are celebrating, having been awarded grants of up to £500 by Iceni Water through the new ICENI Refreshment Fund. Launched in June 2009, this innovative community grant scheme aims to enable more people to choose a healthy lifestyle by getting active or taking part in grass roots sport within London, East Anglia and the Home Counties.
Brett Fleming-Jones, managing director of ICENI Waters Ltd, comments: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the ICENI Refreshment Fund. Since its launch we’ve already received 50 applications, all of which have been very strong: the judging process has been extremely hard!”
Successful applicants in the first round of awards include:
- Colchester community street wardens, who will be using their grant to set up a series of Street Dance Workshops for six to 16 year-old youths in local estates
- Marks Tey Parish Council, who will now be able to refurbish the village basketball court which has fallen into disrepair
- Isle of Ely Rowing Club: who need to purchase new oars to cope with their 27% increase in membership in the last year
- Saffron Dynamos Football Club: a new community Club in Saffron Walden that needs to purchase kit to get up and running
- Little Hallingbury Cricket Club, who have been fundraising to upgrade their pavilion which is now also used by the Village Rounders Club and is the only remaining village community space
- The Badminton Academy: currently a very successful club in Basildon that needs funding to extend their activities to provide junior coaching and a junior badminton club in South Woodham Ferrers.
The next tranche of awards will be made at the end of December 2009.
